Body Contouring & Liposuction

Body contouring by suctioning out of extra fat underneath the skin is termed Liposuction (also known as Lipoplasty). This procedure is one of the most commonly performed procedures in Aesthetic & Cosmetic Surgery worldwide. Liposuction can be done for a small specific area of the body eg. the abdomen (belly region) to remove the belly fat, or the hips, thighs etc and also we can combine 2-3 regions at one sitting. The decision to treat one region or treat multiple regions at one Operatin depends on number of factors, most importantly it depends on patient’s body contour, patient’s own desire and expectation, fitness for surgery and safety profile of the patient.

Fat ‘suctioning’ aka Liposuction is usually done under General Anesthesia (where patient is put off to sleep completely). It includes 3 basic steps –

1. Infiltration of fluid – We infiltrate some fluids (known as Wetting/Tumescent fluid) which consists of Normal Saline, Local Anesthesia, drugs to reduce bleeding -all this  balloons the region so that we can easily suction out fat without damaging any nearby tissues. The fluids ultimately are absorbed by the body

2. Fat Suctioning – With better understanding of the surgery over time, the technology of suctioning of fat has also evolved with innovations advancing technology. The commonly used ways are –

a. Standard suction-assisted liposuction (SAL)

b. Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction (UAL)

c. Power-assisted Liposuction (PAL)

d. Vaser-assisted Liposuction (VAL)

We at our center offer the most advanced and the best method of Liposuction – VASER-assisted Liposuction, as we truly believe to provide the best to our patients

Vaser – assisted Liposuction (VAL)

VAL is the latest generation technology which uses third generation ultrasound – assisted device that as the fat cells are displaced, they are mixed with the tumescent solution by a process called acoustic streaming, further breaking down the fat clumps into smaller groups of intact fat cells, which are subsequently aspirated. Since the air bubbles cannot intersperse between the cells of more dense tissues like blood vessels, nerves and collagen fibers, these tissues remain largely unaffected by the ultrasound energy. The majority of the fat cells in the emulsion remain intact, allowing fat that is treated and removed during Vaser to be utilized for subsequent fat grafting procedures.

Post-surgery recovery period

Patients are discharged from the hospital after an overnight stay on routine medications. They are advised to wear tailored compression garments which provides the final post surgery reshaping of the skin after Liposuction and helps in reducing the swelling.

Patients can gradually return to work after about 7-10 days of Surgery. They are advised to avoid any strenuous activity (eg. Gym) and overexertion during this time.

Who is an ideal patient ?

Liposuction is not the surgery to loose weight. Ideally, it is suited for patients who are mild-moderately overweight and have excess accumulation of fat in specific region s of the body like the abdomen, hips (love handles), thighs etc which are best treated by liposuction.

Patients own expectations, desire and motivation plays an important role in achieving the final results of Liposuction.

Lastly, it is most important to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle after the surgery to achieve a long lasting result of Liposuction
