Botox
Botox is the US trade name of Allergan, Inc for their Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) product – Onabotulinumtoxin A. Botox is the general term commonly used by the patients/public to indicate treatment for wrinkles by injections !
Uses of Botox –
- Glabellar (Inner eyebrow) wrinkles
- Forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet (wrinkles near outer side of the eye)
- Bunny lines (wrinkles at the junction of the eye and nose)
- Gummy lines (excess exposure of gums on normal minimal smiling)
- Neck (Platysma) wrinkles
- Excessive hypertrophy of the Masseters (Jaw muscles)
- Excessive sweating on the palms and axilla – Hyperhydrosis
Mechanism of Action of Botox®
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by a bacteria Clostridium botulinum. This protein when injected on the muscles, act by blocking the muscle activity and thus resulting in clinical beneficial actions, such as loss of wrinkles (muscle overactivity)
Formulations of Botulinum toxin ?
Seven serologically distinct types of botulinum toxin have been identified—designated as types A, B, C1, D, E, F, and G. Only botulinum toxin A and B have been used clinically

Duration of action?
The precise duration of action is difficult to assess but average duration lasts for 4-6 months. The effect of Botox is temporary until the action of Botulinum toxin lasts.
Safety ?
The safety of Botulinum Toxin A is well documented on literature. Both short and long term studies have proved exceptional safety of BoNT-A injections.
